The Fourth and Channel Streets Safety Project
Mission Bay has added 640 units of housing in the last
15 years to a single block of Channel street that is now
on the high injury network.
Channel Street can be calmed with a "road diet," simply reducing the lanes of vehicular travel to one lane in each direction. Doing so would create an opportunity to convert curbside parallel parking to a different configuration - back-in angled parking - that both further calms traffic and would increase the amount of parking spaces on the Channel Street.

Channel Street needs a construction plan that is safe for people on bikes.
Channel Street between the traffic circle and 4th Street has no safe route for bikes today. Once construction is complete, there will be a protected route through Mission Creek Park. Between now and then, there will be several years with four major construction projects on a span of roadway that is partially designated on the City's High Injury Network. Â
Channel Street is dangerous.Â

Fourth Street's unprotected bike lane is older than most buildings on Fourth Street.Â
Mission Bay has added more than 1,300 units of new housing to the 4-block span of Fourth Street between Channel & Mission Bay Blvd in the last 15 years.Â

It's time to protect the 4th Street bike lane.Â
A protected design for cyclists will improve pedestrian safety, reducing the crossing distance for pedestrians facing vehicular traffic. And, a re-envisioned Fourth street must also include common-sense pedestrian safety features such as hardened sight lines and painted safety zones. Â
